This paper describes the functionalities of Moodle exploited for the online Italian language and culture courses offered by the University for Foreigners of Perugia. As a robust and versatile learning management system, Moodle is the core platform for delivering comprehensive language instruction and cultural education. The system enables the integration of production, reception, interaction, mediation, and assessment activities aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference for languages, Companion Volume (2020), thereby supporting holistic language learning and assessment practices. The platform supports a variety of educational activities, including interactive multimedia resources, discussion forums and collaborative projects, all designed to create immersive learning experiences. To further enrich this learning environment, an AI plugin, developed collaboratively by the University for Foreigners of Perugia and the Italian University Line of Florence, has been integrated into Moodle. This integration allows users to access an interactive AI system, fostering the learning process. By leveraging advanced technologies such as natural language processing and machine learning, the tool enhances the platform providing real-time feedback and adaptive learning pathways. The AI plugin offers additional features, including automated suggestions, virtual scenarios, conversational practice and personalized learning analytics, which can collectively contribute to a more engaging and effective educational experience.
